What a great day! I’m so thankful for this experience. I’m guessing this was more of a realistic typical Thanksgiving day with a big family than the imaginary one I had in my head since forever. The biggest thing I learned about being in a big family on a holiday is that nothing goes as you imagine it in your head! There was laughter, tears, joy, stress, burnt gravy, amazing homemade cranberry sauce, and then a couple video worthy mishaps. It was wonderful!
There was this amazing deep fryer that you put oil in and heat up for 45 minutes and then add the turkey and the bird comes out golden, crispy, fall off the bone delicious. So they set it on the counter, and add the oil. Immediately the oil travels onto the counter, down the cabinets, creating a flooded puddle on the floor. It just keeps pouring out and after the split second shock and momentary panic passed, they quickly realized the plug was not closed. Easy fix…Big mess! Funny.
About 30 minutes into cooking a 20lb turkey, the deep fryer completely stopped working! I could hear the stress rise to panic as talk of calling KFC for a turkey suddenly took precedence. Yay for Jason who noticed the crock pot was also not working and knew the breaker had overloaded and flipped off. Easy fix…No mess! Not funny.
The door opened and closed more times than I ever imagined and I was keenly aware that the house was filling with family. The draft from the grandkids going in and out, in and out, in and out caused the aroma from the kitchen to fill the whole downstairs. It was heavenly!
We had a cooler on the deck with cold drinks so I walked outside and got a drink. There are these great chairs on the deck and the weather was perfect so I grabbed a drink and sat down, only to discover it was soaked! My clothes got soo wet! We have been in a major drought, and the night before was the first time it had rained in over a month. Easy fix…kinda a mess! Funny.
So I go inside and I tell Donna if she needs me that I will be upstairs drying my very wet clothes with a hair dryer…ha! But she thought that would take too long so she sent me to the bathroom and I hung out in there while she took my clothes to dry them for me. There is this strange banging noise about every ten seconds. Finally, I hear her say “Chris, you’re going to have to come fix the dryer, the door won’t stay shut!” Praise the Lord for Chris! Easy fix…no mess! Very funny.
The turkey was finally finished and it was well worth the trouble but it gave one last effort to make us laugh! The men are trying to lift it out of the deep fryer and it’s refusing to come out. It’s stuck!
It was a great day and we are so blessed to have so many people gathered together! I stand in awe at all the things the Lord has done in my life this year.
John 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
Last, but definitely not least…there was a dog! This little girl brings me so much joy.
